Sources:The
roots and rhizoma of Rheum officinale Baill. Family
Palygonaceae.
Constituents:
Containing anthraquinones:rhein, emodin, chrysophanol, aloe-emodin,
sennosides, rheinosides, tannins, etc.
Actions: Studies
in vitro showed that the hot water extract of the herb, at
a dose of 500u/ml has an inhibiting action on JTC-26 with
a inhibitory rate of over 90% and with a dose of 5ug/ml could
kill the HL-60 cell line.
Experiments in vivo indicated that
emodin intraperitoneally injected at a dose of 75mg/kg to
breast cancer and melanoma on mice with an inhibitory rate
of 45% and 73% respectively. In addition, emodin could prolong
the survival period for 47%, when it intraperitoneally injected
at a dose of 40mg/kg for 7 days on P388 Leukemia in mice.

prescription of Ma Huang Tang for Leukemia:
Semen Strychni 0.9g
Radix et Rhizoma Rhei 30g
Herba Galii Teneri 30g
Herba Scutellariae Barbatae 30g
Rhizoma Amorphophalli 30g
Herba Hedyotis Diffusae 30g
The above herbs were decocted for oral
administration one dosage daily, 14 cases of acute leukemia
were treated with the prescription and accompanied with Compound
Cytarabine.
The results showed that l case of acute
granulocytic leukemia was complete remission, 4 cases partially
alleviated, l cases of acute lymphatic leukemia and 2 cases
of acute monocytic leukemia partially alleviated. The total
alleviated rate was 57.1%.
