Sources:The
fruit of Lycium barbarum L. Family Solanaceae.
Constituents:
Containing mamy kinds of amino acids, betaine, physalien,
guanidine derivative, carotion, B2, niacin, cinnamic acid,
the main composition of anti-cancer is Lycium barbarum polysaccharides
(LBP).
Actions:The herb
has a inhibitory rate above 90% against human cervial carcinoma
cell line JTC-26. Test in vivo, showed that daily dose of
LBP 10 or 20mg/kg for 7 days inhibited S180 tumor growth by
31% or 39% on mice. Combination with CTX and LBP increased
the inhibiting action on tumor (S180) weight about three folds
over than that of CTX alone , i. e. 54% and 14%, respectively.
The results showed that LBP and CTX have remarkable cooperative
effect. In addition, LBP has a radiosensitizing action against
Lewis lung carcinoma on mice.
Indications:
It was used for treatment of intestine, stomach, pancreatic
cancer, osteoma and leukemia etc.
A randomized and control clinical trial
of LBP as radiosensitizing agent has been completed. There
61 cases of inoprable primary lung cancer in the trial. The
focus of primary cancer was exposed by R-ray of 60Co with
a dose of 60 or 70 Gy per 6 or 7 weeks, 5 times per week.
In order to observe change of the focus, the patients were
taken chest radiography. The 52 cases divided into two groups
that were radiotherapy alone group and radiotherapy combined
with LBP group. At 2 hours before exposure of R-ray, LBP of
150mg was taken 5 times weekly. 52 cases could be evaluated,
for the combined therapeutic group: the CR, PR, S and total
responsive rates rate were 50% (13 cases) and 92.3% and for
the single radiotherapeutic group, the CR, PR, S and total
responisive rates were 50% (13 cases), 42.3% (11 cases), 7.3%
(2 cases) and 92.3% and for the single radiotherapeutic group,
the CR, PR, S and total responisive rates were 26.9% (7 cases),
30.8% (8 cases), 42.3% (11 cases) and 57.5% respectively.
The contrast between the two groups has remarkable difference
(P<0.01). The results showed that LBP possessed obviously
radiosensitizing effect. In the therapy, LBP has no obviously
toxic or side actions. Only in a few patients the xerosis
of nose mucous membrane was found, occasionally has oppilation
and nosebleed. To decrease the dosage of LBP, above symptoms
could be spontaneously vanished.
